On the first day, you’ll check out some of the famous spots that San Francisco is known for – the vibrant piers and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Starting with the popular spots isn’t just for Instagram pictures, although they make a good one, but it’s to feel comfortable and safe in a new city, faster.
Overview of Day 1 Itinerary:
- Ferry Building
- Ride a Historic Streetcar
- PIER 39
- Hyde Street Pier
- Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience
- Fort Mason Square
- Palace of Fine Arts
- Golden Gate Bridge
- Presidio Park
START AT THE FERRY BUILDING
Day 1 starts off at the Ferry Building, a hub of local culture and stores. As you wander the marketplace, try out something new from the stores, or chat with the vendors to learn about their work, they will be more than happy to share their work with you!
Next, step outside for a breathtaking view of the Bay Bridge, an architectural marvel that has stood tall since 1936.
Now, it’s time to experience a ride in one of San Francisco’s iconic streetcars [use your 3-day visitor pass to get on to one]. These historic rail cars, some dating back to the early 1900s, are integral to the city’s transportation heritage. Ride the streetcar to the next stop, Pier 39.
EXPLORE PIER 39
Pier 39 is one of San Francisco’s most vibrant and exciting attractions. This place is full of activities and sights to see, and you might actually spend an entire day going through everything there.
There are endless unique shops, from a store that sells products made just for left-handed people to a shop full of sea shells.
For those who want more than just “looking around”, step into another dimension with the Mirror Maze or experience the exhilarating 7D Experience.
If you are interested in history, you would love to visit Alcatraz Island – a journey back in time to one of the most infamous prisons in history.
As you walk around, you will come across the nostalgic Carousel. Take a ride, enjoy the moment. From there, you will start approaching the waterside, where the sea lions await. Take in the sights, sounds, and scents of the pier – feel the cool breeze, hear the gulls calling, smell the salty sea air. It’s a sensory delight!
Once we reach the sea lions, I encourage you to sit down, grab your journal, and start to reflect on your day so far. This is a great way to slow down your moments and make them more memorable.
Remember, a trip to San Francisco is about embracing the city’s spirit – energy, diversity, and charm. So immerse yourself in the Pier 39 experience, and let the city’s magic touch your soul.
WALK AROUND FISHERMAN’S WARF
Next, explore the vibrant Fisherman’s Wharf and its surrounding attractions. This area is a treasure trove of culinary delights, unique shopping, and fascinating history.
Musée Mécanique is a vintage arcade with over 300 games that will transport you back in time. Whether you’re a pinball wizard or a fan of classic claw machines, there’s something here to ignite your nostalgia and put a smile on your face.
After some fun and games, it’s time to indulge in San Francisco’s famous seafood. The Wharf is dotted with restaurants serving fresh catches daily – the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl is a must-try!
In-N-Out is just around the corner for those craving a classic American burger. Pro tip: ask for your fries “Animal Style” from their secret menu for a tasty surprise.
Next, we have options tailored to your interests. History enthusiasts can head to Hyde St. & Jefferson St. to visit historic ships, offering a glimpse into the maritime past.
If you prefer a more luxurious and relaxed experience, Ghirardelli Square awaits with its beautiful architecture and iconic chocolate shop.
Our next destination is Fort Mason Park, a green oasis with a deep-rooted history dating back to the Civil War.
Finally, visit the Palace of Fine Arts, a true architectural gem. Don’t forget to check out the nearby Wave Organ, an acoustic sculpture that uses the ocean to create soothing sounds.
CROSS THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
Now, let’s head towards the Golden Gate Bridge and take the bus at the Richardson & Francisco bus stop. Hop on one of the Muni buses (red) and get off at the next stop in front of the Golden Gate Welcome Center.
Walk around the area and read up on the stories. Also, grab a coffee and be amazed by the Golden Gate Bridge’s beauty from the Round House Cafe, which offers various food options with stunning bridge views.
Next, continue your walk along the East Sidewalk of the Golden Gate Bridge. This sidewalk offers spectacular views of downtown San Francisco, Alcatraz, and Angel Island. Be sure to look out for the bridge’s famous International Orange color, a sight that will truly take your breath away.
After crossing the bridge and returning to the Welcome Center, a short hike on the Battery East Trail will take you to the historic Battery East Fort.
These ruins provide a glimpse into San Francisco’s military past and offer an excellent vantage point for panoramic city and bridge views.
From here, head down to Baker Beach. This beautiful stretch of sand provides a unique bridge perspective and is an excellent spot for a beach picnic. Please note that the northern section of the beach is clothing-optional.
Today’s next and last stop will be to explore the Park Presidio. Take the Muni bus back to the Palace of Fine Arts and walk up Lyon Street to the Presidio Chestnut Gate.
TAKE A WALK AROUND THE PRESIDIO PARK
Park Presidio. This beautiful park in the Richmond District is a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving nature amid urban development.
Our adventure begins with a bit of history. Established in 1867, the park was initially a military post and has since transformed into a thriving natural habitat. Park Presidio is a paradise for nature lovers with its dense forests, sprawling lawns, and tranquil lakes.
First is a visit to the iconic statue of Yoda, the wise Jedi Master from Star Wars. Installed in 2005, the bronze statue sits atop a fountain outside Lucasfilm’s headquarters in the Letterman Digital Arts Center. It’s a must-see for any Star Wars fan and a great photo opportunity. Remember, as Yoda says, “Do or do not. There is no try.”
Next, we’ll explore the magical Wood Line, an art installation by Andy Goldsworthy. This winding path, created from fallen eucalyptus branches, is a sight. As we walk, watch for the variety of plants and wildlife that call this park home. You might spot raccoons, skunks, and even the occasional coyote!

Before making your way to the park, fuel up with a hearty breakfast. Go to one of the cafes and order your breakfast of the day, or make one at home and bring it with you. Head to the top of Mission Dolores Park for the most epic breakfast by looking at a stunning panorama of the San Francisco skyline.
It’s a sight that never fails to impress, offering a unique perspective of the city. This is also a great spot to snap some Instagram-worthy photos.
Dolores Park is a beloved hangout spot for locals. People enjoy picnics, playing sports, walking dogs, or simply soaking up the sun. It’s a vibrant snapshot of San Francisco’s community life and a great place to relax and people-watch.
As the morning winds down, it’s time to hop on the J Church Muni Metro line. You don’t need to worry if you’ve purchased a 3-day Muni pass. If someone asks for it, show the app. The J Church line will take you directly to Powell Street, right in the heart of downtown.
UNION SQUARE
Once you reach the Powell Station, walk up to the Union Square. Here, you can go window shopping, visit art galleries, or be surrounded by pigeons that feel too comfortable around people.
