Are Portable Bidets Worth It? – From Personal Travel Experience
This blog post is all about are portable bidets worth it?
The Short Answer: Depends on how you feel about your hygiene practices.
I think portable bidets are a smart engineering project. But it is not an innovative concept.
You could get the portable bidet if you think toilet paper alone does not get the job done, which i agree with.
Or if you think wet wipes create an unnecessary amount of waste, which can also be true.
And the prices of bidets are quiet affordable, ranging from $10 to $60 depending on the design of the bidet.
When You Might Want One
- When toilet paper isn’t enough
- To reduce waste from wet wipes
- For travel to countries with limited toilet paper
- For outdoor adventures like off the road road trips, or going trekking.
- Sometimes, you might benefit from a bidet if you live a van life.
Real Talk: How Well They Work
Let me be honest – these work great for number 1.
But for number 2, you’ll probably still need a wet wipe or a piece or two of toilet paper to finish the job.
Also, there are different types of portable bidets on the market. There are bidets with built in electric pressure, where could be as close to the home bidet. But the manual ones are just good for rinsing, but not for cleaning.
And for most bidets, the temperature of the water will depend on the type of water you are filling the bidet with. If you decide to fill it with warm water, it could cool down before you get to use it.
My Experience with DIY Alternatives
I haven’t personally used the engineered portable bidets.
But I’ve tried the DIY version using a regular water bottle – just make sure it’s a squeezable one with a sport caps like these on amazon.
It’s not as fancy as the engineered versions, but it works if you need a quick clean up.
The trick is to control your squeeze pressure and aim well – it takes some practice but, it’s basically free!
I found it easier to use with Asian squatting toilets, but it can be challenging with modern toilets, but it is still doable.
This is actually where portable bidets have an advantage – they’re designed with longer necks so you don’t have to awkwardly reach down in the toilet with the DIY bottle. (Did I paint the picture too well? Sorry! Lol)
Quick Travel Tip
I would highly recommend that you pack one when traveling to an Asian county. They do not have endless toilet paper lying around in the public bathrooms.
Sometimes in public bathrooms, you’ll find attendants who you have to pay to use the facility (apparently, Europe also has a “pay to pee” culture). You might even have to ask them directly for toilet paper.
It sounds kind of, awkward, because it is. But it is normal for them. It is in the USA where everything is available.
Final Note: Are Protable Bidets Worth It?
Based on my research, personal experience using a DIY portable bidet, and of course reading the Reddit posts and reviews, I have formed my personal opinion on the worth of getting a portable bidets.
And I say, portable bidets are worth it if you care about “feeling clean” like you would feel after taking a shower – because portable bidets are like tiny showers for your private areas.
